"Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall; Death is the fifth, and master of all."

"Tell them they belong among us, no matter how we treat them."

ᠨᠥᠬᠥᠷᠯᠡᠯ, нөхөрлөл, достық, достук, 友谊(friendship) -- a form of intimacy arising from social ties and actively chosen by individuals, a mode through which community (koinōnia) comes into being.

Before a koinōnia takes shape, the contact zone, where boundaries meet, often becomes the crucial space for generating relationships: contradictions, tensions, and uncertainties surge here. It is precisely in this space that friendship unfolds through small, concrete actions -- the circulation of gifts and exchanges, the emergence of trust and friction, the hesitation between order and belonging. These interwoven lines form a meshwork, building barriers at the edges while also shaping durable nests, tracing a complex cartography of friendship. We continue to reflect on the meaning of "friendship": can it be understood as a practice of reciprocal coexistence, a centripetal force that sustains koinōnia, a kind of magic that allows things to endure in an unsettled world?

The Fifth Season: Archive of Friendship is a translation project intended for Chinese-speaking readers. We focus on the histories and lived realities of the northern nomadic world and its associated cross-border regions, approaching them through everyday life, social networks, religious practices, and artistic production. By selecting original texts, academic essays, and theoretical writings concerned with the making of relationships and experiences of boundaries, we seek to enter a vast socio-geographical space and expand a living archive of friendship.
